If you’ve been looking for a new career and want to get into law enforcement, then you should know that the Grand Rapids Police Department has begun the recruitment process for new officers, which they’ll hire in March of 2021. The good news is, you don’t have to have any previous experience as the police department will sponsor you to attend the GVSU Police Academy program.

According to the job posting in the city’s job site, the Police Academy starts on May 3, 2021, and goes through August 19, 2021. You'll then have to pass the MCOLES State Licensing Exam, but after you do all that, you’ll be a new police officer with the City of Grand Rapids.

The job posting also says that the department will pay you starting in May when you go to the GVSU Police Academy program, with the expectation after you graduate and pass the state licensing exam, that you will continue your employment with GRPD with a promotion to “Police Officer” classification.

If you’re interested, the GRPD hiring website says there are a few qualifications you must have to apply:

  • Some experience involving communicating with people under varying circumstances.

  • Ability to meet MCOLES requirements.

The deadline to apply is pretty soon as well, October 12, 2020, and you have to have taken the Civil Service Test, which they send you, by October 15th.
