These “Red Flags” Are Super Accurate If You Live In Grand Rapids
When you live in a city as unique as ours, you start to notice the commonalities between everyone. When it's even slightly nice outside, we all flock to the beach. A weekend away means going up North. You've probably been to a Griffins game. If you're over 21, you've been to one of the many bars around Beer City USA.
However, not everything we do is innocent. Some of the things people from Grand Rapids do are enough to make your eye twitch. I came across a thread on Reddit of Grand Rapidians discussing what are some toxic traits of people in Grand Rapids. These are my personal favorites.
Thinks "The Grand Castle Apartments" Are The Best
Reddit user CorgiSilver said that one red flag is thinking The Grand Castle Apartments in Grandville, MI is considered "top-notch living". The apartments have 520 units and are "the second largest castle structure in the world." Outside of the gothic appearance, there isn't anything very worthwhile about them. Of course, you can't bash the place for its ambitious design because it is cool to have such a unique building so close, but in essence, it is still just an apartment building.
Believes That Mojo's Is the Best Live Music Venue
User syncopated56 posted one that made me laugh from personal experience. They said anyone who says that "Mojo's is the finest live music venue" is a major red flag, and another user followed up with stating that even going to Mojo's is a red flag.
Mojo's is a bar and restaurant downtown in GR whose flagship feature is its dueling piano bar, where pianists play recommendations from the ’60s, '70s, and '80s. It's pretty cool, but to say it is the best in GR for live music is a stretch. There are many music venues around GR ranging from Midtown to Pyramid Scheme that book incredible acts. All respect to Mojo's, but to say it is the best?
Downtown Parking
It is a well-known problem that there are just not enough places to park downtown. 28% of downtown GR is designated for parking, so complaining about there being nowhere to park is not a red flag. That's just understandable. However, what is a red flag is people who are in suped-up big trucks attempting to park on the streets or in parking ramps, and then they complain about there being no parking.
There have been so many instances of me being in a parking ramp where someone will take up two spots just to fit, or be unable to get out of a spot due to a lack of mobility. If someone is unable to park, sometimes it isn't the city's fault.
Clean Up After Yourself
This is one issue that I don't think there is any remedy for except that people start being decent. Based on how this winter went, you may be shocked to learn that Michigan usually gets snow. Have you ever walked around downtown, or walked around your house and just seen dog poop sitting on the snow, left behind by a lazy owner who thinks that the poo will just melt away with the snow?
That's what user NinjaBabaMama pointed out and they are spitting facts. Just because the snow goes away doesn’t mean whatever is on top or in the snow does too. Please pick up after yourself.

Those are five red flags that if you live in Grand Rapids, you should stay away from someone who aligns with any of these. If you want to see more of these red flags, you can find the full thread here.
