A Grand Rapids man allegedly attacked his family with an ax on Sunday, but did manage to surrender peacefully to police after a nearly four hour standoff.

According to WOOD TV, 54 year old Larry Walker was arguing with his brother and father, then things escalated with Walker swinging an ax at both of them. The family members were able to dodge the ax but one members hand did get injured in in the process.

Officers arrived on the scene just before 3 p.m. on Themlma Avenue SE between Griggs and Elliot streets where a standoff began until around 7 p.m.

GRPD had their Special Response Team arrive with an armored vehicle around 5 p.m. Negotiators were able to convince Walker to come out of the house without incident around 7 p.m.

After searching the home, police were unable to locate a gun.

Walker is looking at being charged with assault with intent to commit great bodily harm.
