The Grand Rapids Griffinsare playing a part in American Hockey League and National Hockey League history this week.

The Griffins' first outdoor game is against the Toronto Marlies at Comerica Park in Detroit on Monday, Dec. 30. The game is the fifth outdoor contest in AHL history.

The Griffins have a family skate at Comerica Park tonight and practice at the home of Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers on Monday morning. The game is at 5 p.m. EST.

The two AHL teams play again at 6 p.m. EST Dec. 31 on New Year's Eve at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

The NHL Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs is a sold-out 109,901-seat Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Wednesday, Jan. 1. The game is at 1 p.m. EST and is being broadcast by NBC-TV.

Both events are part of the Hockeytown Winter Festival.
