That Viral Photo of a Flight Attendant Holding a Baby? It Happened on a Flight to Grand Rapids
We’ve all seen plenty of flight nightmares online: delays, lost luggage, idiots behaving badly. But every once in a while, a story comes along from 30,000 feet up that gives you hope and makes you realize not everything is terrible.
And this one landed right here in Grand Rapids at Gerald R. Ford International Airport!

If you haven't seen the viral photo all over social media, here is what went down on United Flight 3486 coming into GRR from Newark earlier this month.

What Happened on Flight 3486 to Grand Rapids
An exhausted new mom was traveling with her baby when she started to doze off. As she slept, her baby began squirming and slipping right off her lap.
Enter flight attendant Monique Harris.
A Quick Catch and a Much-Needed Break
Monique spotted what was happening, rushed over, and caught the baby before it fell. But it’s what she did after the quick catch that has millions of people talking.

The quick save woke the mom up, but instead of just handing the baby back, Monique told her to go right back to sleep and promised to give her a break. She held the baby herself while the mother got a chance to rest.
Going Viral for Unsolicited Kindness
Frequent traveler John Frehse, who goes by woodylovestravel online, witnessed the whole thing. He snapped a photo of Monique holding the baby, and posted it online, tagging the airline with the note: "All is not lost in the turbulent time... she is an A+ employee."
When the post blew up nationally, Monique commented that she was moved to tears, adding that she was just being her normal self and never expected the recognition.
She later told People magazine that she'd actually been chatting with the mom earlier in the flight. Turns out, the woman was traveling completely solo and running on empty. She had gone to Colombia on vacation while pregnant, ended up giving birth over there, and was finally making the long, exhausting trip back home to the U.S.
Flying with an infant is difficult enough on a good day. Big shoutout to Monique for showing what real, unsolicited kindness looks like, and bringing a little extra good news right home to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
