Grand Central Market on Monroe Center downtown Grand Rapids is permanently closing.

The market and deli shared the news to Facebook on Monday, saying they had planned to reopen following the stay-at-home order being lifted on June 1, but at this time are "unable to do so" and that "the universe has bigger plans with the space that Grand Central Market currently occupies."

The owners, Tom Powell, Cheryl Powell and Christina Meuser, Cheryl Powell’s daughter, note, "This is not an ideal time for any business, especially small ones," and thank all of their customers throughout the years.

The post goes on to say,

This was not the GOODBYE we intended, and yesterday was certainly not at all how we envisioned GCM's final day. It was absolutely breathtaking witnessing the outpouring of love in and for our community yesterday. We of course would love to have a future 'so long, farewell, proper goodbye' party for GCM. We will keep you posted on party plans, even if it takes a year to plan it and have it.

On Sunday Grand Central Market offered free snacks and beverages to those helping clean up the damage following the riots downtown Grand Rapids the night before.

According to the Grand Rapids Business Journal, Grand Central Market has been open since 2005, with the Powell family acquiring it in 2015.
