‘Moana’ Shares Name With Late Italian Porn Star, Film Renamed in Italy
Moana is set to debut its newest Disney heroine when the full-length cartoon hits theaters on November 23, and the film's been building plenty of buzz since its announcement back in August 2015. But movie theaters in Italy won't have that long-simmering name recognition to bank on when the film premieres there: It will instead be known as Oceania. And according to the Hollywood Reporter, that's likely because the film's central character shares a name with iconic Italian porn star and TV personality Moana Pozzi.
Though Pozzi passed away in 1994 at the age of 33, Italian parents and kids searching for the film and its imagery run the risk of seeing something more moan(a)-filled than the family friendly movie that stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and newcomer Auli'i Cravalho.
Granted, plenty of films get new names overseas. Mental Floss compiled 31 examples that often get straight to the point (Boogie Nights was titled His Great Device Makes Him Famous in China, while they got downright spoiler-y renaming The Sixth Sense as He's a Ghost!). But a secondhand source said on Twitter that when the directors were asked whether Moana Pozzi's name was a factor in the change, "they said Pozzi played a big part in the decision."
