Beavers were once wiped out in Detroit, but have made a comeback. Some beavers have been nicknamed "Eastside Beavers" and Reddit is having a field day with them.

At one time, beavers were nearly eliminated from the entire Lower Peninsula of Michigan. In many areas of Lower Michigan, they were absent for 75 to 130 years. This decline was caused by extensive over-trapping during the fur trade, which continued for nearly 300 years.

Beavers began reappearing in urban areas of Lower Michigan, particularly along the Detroit and Rouge Rivers, around 2008. Since then, their populations have grown significantly in southeast Michigan, with sightings along the Detroit Riverfront, at Belle Isle, and on nearby college campuses.
