Danica Roem has made history yet again. After becoming the first openly transgender person elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2017, Roem won re-election to the state legislature Tuesday (Nov. 5). It's another momentous first by the politician, journalist and avowed metalhead.

As reported by The Hill, Roem defeated Republican Kelly McGinn this week, with approximately 56 percent of the vote. McGinn carries a strong record of anti-LGBTQ views, and, as outlined by The Daily Beast, even received support and donations from anti-LGBTQ conservative groups and their members. In the 2017 election, Roem defeated longtime Republican Del. Robert Marshall. Marshall, who once labeled himself Virginia's "chief homophobe," introduced an anti-trans bathroom bill to the state legislature that year, via Slate. Since taking the position in 2018, Roem has represented Virginia's 13th district.

"Danica Roem has once again made history, becoming the longest-serving and first openly transgender elected official to be re-elected in our nation's history," Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David said in a statement. "Throughout her tenure in the House of Delegates, Roem has remained focused on the needs of her constituents, despite hateful and divisive attacks from anti-LGBTQ groups and her opponents."

LGBTQ Victory Fund President Annise Parker told the Washington Blade, "Danica inspired trans people across the nation to run for office. Her re-election proves that political revolution is a lasting transformation — not an aberration."

Roem has performed as a vocalist for a Virginia-based metal band called Cab Ride Home. In a 2017 interview with Loudwire, she described her lifelong metal fandom as one that didn't dissipate once elected.

"The funny thing about me being in office, is I will always still be that metal nerd writing 'SLAYER' in the corner of a notebook," Roem said. "Here I am, a 33-year-old stepmom, newly elected and I'm still writing the Metallica ninja star. That totally doesn't change when you get elected into office."

Earlier this year, Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe organized a counter-protest against the Westboro Baptist Church when the hate group descended on Virginia's capital to protest Roem's election.
