They're in every classroom, in your home, and you likely have a piece of art made from them hanging on your fridge. Crayons are a part of many people's day-to-day lives, supplying kids with hours of entertainment and helping develop young artists. But there's a place in Michigan where that tiny crayon, well, isn't so tiny. In fact, there's a park built around crayons and features a huge crayon-box statue.

Randall Wickes Children's Playground AKA Crayola Park

Opened in 1998, the Randall Wickes Children's Playground (located at 1739 Fordney St) was designed with a theme that prominently features Crayons. Why Crayons? No, it isn't because Crayola is based there or crayons were created in Saginaw. Rather, OCBA Landscape Architects, the company that designed the park, received input from the community and saw a "unique crayon concept" among the residents, so they embraced it.

Outside of the usual park installations like swings and a jungle gym, there is a maze and other equipment based around crayons. The park has no official affiliation with Crayola. For nearly 30 years, the park has been centered on the Crayon box near the entrance. However, wear and tear on the park has begun to add up, and the City of Saginaw is looking to completely overhaul the park (while keeping the Crayon theme).

Crayola Park Overhaul Project Requires Funding

Yesterday on Facebook, the City of Saginaw Government made a lengthy post announcing a new effort to raise funds to give the park some much-needed TLC. The park makeover would see many installations updated, fences removed, new equipment, such as sensory equipment for children with disabilities, added, and safer pour-in-place rubber installed, making the park more accessible overall.

So far, the City of Saginaw has raised $340,000 of the projected $675,000 needed for the renovation project, and they are hoping to raise enough to get this project started ASAP.

Whether you've been to Crayola Park before or not, it is a pretty unique park and definitely worth swinging by.
