CMU President Delivers Diploma to Injured Student in Hospital

The President of Central Michigan University, Dr. Robert Davies, recently personally delivered a diploma to a student who was unable to attend graduation after being hit by a car.

CM Life reports that CMU student, Walter Tufts II, was struck by a vehicle while walking on November 18. Tufts broke his left left and tore a ligament in his right knee.

After working for 10 years to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocal Music, Tufts was disheartened to learned he'd be unable to walk at his graduation ceremony in Mt. Pleasant.

But the graduation ceremony was able to come to him. On December 6, President Rob Davies made the 150 mile trip to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak to deliver Tufts his hard-earned degree.

Surrounded by family and friends, Davies in full regalia, presented Tufts with his diploma.

Davies told WXYZ,

“Commencement is an important milestone for every student, and I didn’t want Walter to miss the opportunity to celebrate his achievement with his family and friends. It was an honor and a pleasure to shake his hand today and personally confer his Bachelor of Science degree.”

Davies is no stranger to expressing his passion for education as well as honoring students for their hard work. Back in May, Davies surprised a Mother who missed her own graduation at Ferris State University to attend her son's at CMU by presenting her diploma the same time as his.
