Clutch is from Germantown, Maryland. The band consists of singer Neil Fallon, bassist Dan Maines, guitarist Tim Sult, and drummer Jean-Paul Gaster. The band all went to school together at Senaca Valley High School.

Clutch began to get noticed when they released their album Transnational Speedway League.

Songs like A Shotgun Named Marcus, Binge and Purge, El Jefe Speaks, and Earthworm quickly made heads turn when Clutch was on stage.

When I saw Clutch in 1993 in Flint, Michigan, I was blown away because they were nothing like any band I saw before.

At the time bassist, Dan Maines stood sideways on stage never looking at the audience. Guitarist Tim Sult was not flashy, did not stand out, just quietly and calmly got the job done with simplistic riffs and a lot of wah-wah pedal.

Drummer Jean-Paul Gaster played with a drive and a groove that has always been infectious. One minute Gaster is driving the band like a hot rod in a drag race down the main street in a small town, to then laying down a funky groove that was sure to make your head-bob.

Singer Neil Fallon is a character live on stage delivering his well throughout lyrics that touch on fast cars, religion, humor, and anything that drives his pen to paper. Fallon often uses hand gestures on stage that animate the story he is delivering and has done this his whole career while looking like an average dad in a middle-class neighborhood.

Clutch has never been a flashy band, there is no pyro, airbursts, stage props or giant light shows, just a simple band who are exclusively about the music and delivering a great performance.

Clutch did a powerful set at the GLC Live. In all the years I have seen them, they have never played the same setlist or even the same songs back to back. Every show the sets have been different but one thing is consistent, if you are at their show, you have a great time.

Clutch played a killer setlist at the GLC Live at 20 Monroe:

  2. Firebirds!
  3. Burning Beard
  4. Earth Rocker
  5. 10,000 Witnesses
  6. Rats
  7. Green Buckets
  8. Red Alert (Boss Metal Zone)
  9. Lord of This World (Black Sabbath Cover)
  10. Abraham Lincoln
  11. Willie Nelson
  12. American Sleep
  13. Profits of Doom
  14. The Mob Goes Wild
  15. Cypress Grove
  16. Promoter (Of Earthbound Causes)
  17. The Regulator
  18. A Quick Death in Texas
  19. Spacegrass
  20. Subtle Hustle

If you are a Clutch fan, as you can see it was a spectacular setlist, and they have so many songs you may be scratching your head, why didn't they play this, or this. I asked Fallon about songs that were not on the setlist and he said, "We can only do so much in one show. Come see us tomorrow night and some of those songs will be on the list." This is why a lot of fans follow them from night to night.

If you have not ever seen Clutch, I highly recommend you take the chance the next time they come to Michigan. It's a fun band with a fun show, with a fun crowd who are all collectively there, for one thing...a good time.
