Some people use smoke detectors, but this Grand Rapids, Michigan, family uses cats to detect a fire.

According to WZZM, Grand Rapids Fire Lieutenant William Smith said it was an absolute miracle that the cats alerted the family of the fire in their home Thursday morning.

The started started in the kitchen or a home located on Coit Avenue NE, near Fairbanks Avenue NE. Smoke was seen coming from the two story home.

The fire department was contacted just after 6 a.m. and fire fighters had the blaze under control by 6:45 a.m.

Unfortunately for the family, they didn't have any smoke detectors in the home but they do have some cats and one of them alerted the family which allowed the family to get out with no one getting hurt including all their pets.

The family consists of a mother, two children, nine cats, one dog and a pet rat.

Lieutenant Smith wants to remind everyone to make sure your home has fire detectors and to make sure they are working.
