Recalled carrots linked to an E. coli outbreak have sickened nearly 40 people across the U.S. One person has died.

This comes after the deadly E. coli outbreak linked to McDonalds Quarter Pounders.

Grimmway Farms Carrot Recall

Grimmway Farms of Bakersfield, Calif., is recalling select organic whole and baby carrots because they may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli.)

The recalled carrots were were sold nationwide, including in Michigan, at major retailers like Target, Trader Joe's, Walmart, and Whole Foods. So far 39 illnesses have been reported, including 15 hospitalizations along with one death, across 18 states.

Health officials are investigating the outbreak.

E. coli bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Some strains can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sepsis, and other illnesses.

Symptoms can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting.

What Carrots are Being Recalled?

According to the FDA, the recalled carrots should no longer be available to buy in stores but may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers.

Recalled products include:

  • Organic whole carrots, which do not have a best-if-used-by date printed on the bag, but were available for purchase at retail stores from August 14 through October 23, 2024,
  • Organic baby carrots with best-if-used-by-dates ranging from September 11 through November 12, 2024.

Whole carrots were sold under the brand names 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O Organic, President’s Choice, Simple Truth, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and Wholesome Pantry

Baby carrots were sold under the brand names 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Kroger, LIDL, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O Organic, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and Wholesome Pantry.

What to Do if You Bought Recalled Carrots

Do not eat the recalled products. If you bought them, throw them away and clean and sanitize the surfaces they touched.
