BMX star Dave Mirra, was found dead in a truck in Greenville, North Carolina today, of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police say the 41-year-old BMX legend had been visiting friends in the area before the incident.

Not much else is known at this time, and police are still working on the case.

Dave Mirra held 24 Gold Medals for the X Games, and was the record-holder until 2013. After his amazing BMX career, he was featured in his own video game, hosted Real World/Road Rules Challenge on MTV for two seasons, and also started his own bike company, MirraCo.

We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon."

Mayor Allen Thomas of the City of Greenville
