With the amount of news coverage over 3 measly inches of snow we have today as our first snowfall of the season, you'd think we were having some crazy blizzard. But alas, flurries indicate we are just one breeze away from having to scrape our cars off every morning and bundle up extra tight to try to stay just a little warmer.

There are plenty of lengths we will go to to avoid getting out of the cold. With this in mind, there is something you'll want to check about your car going forward this winter.

A Warm Spot For The Holidays

Many of us are lucky enough to have a furnace in our homes, but nature isn't so lucky. This time of year, small animals like mice, squirrels, or cats seek warm places to stay warm, and a perfect spot is inside your car with a nice warm engine.

If you park your car outside there are a few things you should do to minimize the risk of a wrecked engine.

• If your car is spending periods of time without being driven, it's good to run the vehicle now and then or drive it periodically to make sure nothing is in it.
• Make a lot of noise. Close your doors with a passion and knock on the hood of the car. Keep whatever may be in the car alert and unable to settle.
• The last one is obvious, but if you can park in the garage, do so.

Animals in a car can chew wires, and if they make a mess, it will only damage things further. My friend had a mouse make an entire nest in their car and it reeked for months and destroyed the entire air conditioning and ventilation system.
