For the last couple of years, there has been a lot of talk about a 12,000-capacity outdoor amphitheater coming to downtown Grand Rapids. We've seen them getting closer and closer to making this amphitheater a reality as talked about here.

Outdoors shows are great and with an amphitheater coming to Grand Rapids, there may be no need to travel anywhere else to see a show. This new amphitheater, Van Andel Arena, GLC Live at 20 Monroe, DeVos Performance Hall, The Intersection, Belknap Park, Meijer Gardens, and a host of smaller venues and parks mean that any size show can fit in this market. Even multiple shows at the same time.

MLive reported that on Friday, August 5, the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority (CAA) made an agreement with Grand Antion 2.0 that states the CAA who runs Van Andel will be the owner and operator of the amphitheater.

While the ink is drying on the agreement that says CAA is the owner and operator of the forthcoming amphitheater, Grand Action 2.0 is an active partner along with the city of Grand Rapids on this $116 million amphitheater. $50 million of the investment will more than likely come from private investors.

Construction will more than likely begin in 2024 but so far a timeline has not been given. Other projects are already taking place like the sewer work that has been going on in downtown Grand Rapids. The design of the venue still needs to take place but as of today, we are a giant step closer to breaking ground for the new amphitheater.
