Is It a Good Idea to Have the Public Name Things?

For many years organizations have had fun contests with prizes that encourage the public to get involved in naming something.

Having the public name things goes way back and is a great way to bring attention to something new that is coming to a community, and most people who enter the contests to name something have good intentions.

In the day and age of social media, a community can get the word out when trying to have the public name something. The problem is, not everyone has the best of intentions in the social media world. Remember "Boaty McBoatface?"

Didn't the world learn its lesson when the public was asked to name a British sub and the winning name came up Boaty McBoatface?  Do you see the look Prince William has on his face in the picture above?

I have to admit that asking the public to name the local snowplows was pretty funny but snow plows are big and crash through piles of snow so giving them a wild crazy name isn't so bad but there were a lot of names that didn't cut because they were over the top.

America 250 Michigan is having a coloring contest for kids to name Michigan's mascot for the 250-year celebration coming up in 2026. They have started way early in selecting a name they have had to extend the entry period.

What seems like an innocent contest for kids, being that it is out there in the social media world, I'm sure there will be some interesting names that will probably not be appropriate for a contest for kids. One co-worker has already suggested Mitten McMittenface so don't be surprised kids if that is your competition.
