If you are an avid Michigan whitetail deer hunter or looking to get started, the forecast is looking good for a great season in the woods.
According to Outdoor Life magazine, Michigan's deer herd is looking up for 2018 since the state has recovered from the 2013 - 2015 tough winters that really decreased the deer numbers. The Upper Peninsula suffered the most from that stretch of harsh winters.
Michigan's whitetail season will kick off September 22 with an early anterless firearm season. Archery season will begin October 1. Firearm season will start November 15th and last through the 30th which is the states most popular time to hunt.
There are some new rules on baiting and feeding to help control the spread of chronic wasting disease. The new 2018 hunting rules can be found here.
CWD has no cure and causes fatal neurological disease in deer, elk and moose. No word if humans can catch this from the animals but if you harvest an animal with CWD lesions, do not eat the animal. There is a large concern for what CWD will do over time to the state's whitetail population.
So get out there and do some scouting, season is less than a month away!
