In what seems like a blur, Rock on the Range 2012 has come and gone this past weekend. Over 30 of the top acts in rock invaded Crew Stadium in Columbus, OH. Check out our first gallery of photos from the sixth edition of the festival.

Things kicked off on Friday, May 18, for a free kick off party for fans that bought weekend Rock on the Range tickets. The lineup included AC/DC cover band Hells Bells, Miami metal rockers Black Tide, Wingstock artist Foxy Shazam and hair metal homage outfit Hairball.

Saturday kicked off strong with Adelitas Way taking the main stage at noon. Things kept getting better as the day went on. Additional acts included GRD favorites Halestorm, Theory of a Deadman, Chevelle, Slash, Five Finger Death Punch, Shinedown and Incubus. That was just the main stage!

The f.y.e. second stage featured some heavy hitters of its own, including New Medicine, Falling In Reverse, Cavo, P.O.D. and Cypress Hill. Falling In Reverse had to suffer through some technical difficulties during their set. Frontman Ronnie Radke looked visibly upset but kept the energy going. The rest of the band had their own sound problems to deal with, which ultimately cut their set down two songs.

Linkin Park brought the rock at this year’s Billboard Music Awards tonight (May 20) in Los Angeles by performing their new single ‘Burn It Down‘ off their upcoming album ‘Living Things’ (due June 26).

With smoke on the floor and flames bursting in the background, singer Chester Bennington belted out the tune as the rest of guys backed him up on an industrial-looking stage set-up. Rhyme-slinger Mike Shinoda chimed in about halfway through the song with his rap verses.

On a night that was dominated by pop, R&B and hip-hop, Linkin Park represented the rock world with a powerful performance. The televised gig offered a preview of what fans can expect on the band’s upcoming trek with Incubus on this summer’s Honda Civic Tour, which kicks off Aug. 11 in Bristow, Va.

After Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler penned an open letter to fans yesterday (May 19) in response to drummer Bill Ward‘s own letter a few days earlier, Ward responded to Butler’s letter earlier today (May 20). It’s the latest in the ongoing saga surrounding Ward’s departure from the legendary metal band.

In Butler’s letter, titled ‘Heavy Heart,’ he noted, among other things, “Unfortunately, to our surprise, Bill issued a statement on his site saying he’d been offered an un-signable contract. He hadn’t told any one of us he was having contractual problems, and frankly those things are worked out between our representatives, and never between the four of us let alone in public.”

Now, Ward is saying that is not the case. The drummer also insists that Butler’s claim that he demanded a ridiculous fee for the band’s Download festival gig is untrue, in addition to explaining why he made his stance public to the fans. Read Ward’s response to Butler’s letter in its entirety below:

Dear Sabbath Fans and Musicians,

I have read Geezer’s statement of May 19, 2012 titled “Heavy Heart.” Out of respect for the Birmingham gig, I wanted to wait 24 hours before releasing this statement. There are some points he brought up which I want to respond to.

1) I had indeed notified Ozzy, Tony and Geezer, well before my first public statement, that I was having contractual difficulties.

2) I came out into a public forum to be accountable to the fans primarily, and to say at a public level there’s a problem. The band members stopped talking and corresponding with me some time ago, with the exception of a nice letter from Tony on my birthday. Prior to that, Geezer and I were corresponding, but that stopped abruptly in late February after I emailed a specific question to him.

3) In my statement of May 15, I clearly stated I would play Birmingham for free. That was not a problem – charity or otherwise.

4) My Download fee was not an extravagant amount. Originally, when Download was part of a full tour, I had asked for a decent fee. More recently, as we were negotiating just Download/Birmingham and Lollapalooza, I told my attorney that I would accept the proposed small Download fee, but there were other parts of the offer that were unsatisfactory.

I will continue to be honest and respectful towards the band and our fans. I will also confront any untruths about me, and any fault finding missions aimed at me that come to my attention.
I hope the band and the fans had a good gig in Brum.

Papa Roach are gearing up for a busy summer, as the hard rockers are playing the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival this August and also readying a shiny new album. Speaking with Army Sergeant Russell Toof of American Forces Network Europe, frontman Jacoby Shaddix revealed that fans should expect a new Papa Roach album by this September.

“We don’t know the name of the album; we’re still going back and forth about what we feel like the album should be called,” he explained. “The release date is going to be sometime in September. We don’t have a date yet, but sometime in September. And the first single, we’re still trying to whittle down to the final right now…”

As for the upcoming Uproar Tour alongside Staind, Shinedown, P.O.D., Godsmack and more, Shaddix is stoked for it. After all, the guys of Papa Roach have played with almost everyone on the lineup, so it will be like old times.

“Thousand Foot Krutch is gonna be on there, and we’ve never toured with them, but dude, we’ve played shows or done tours with everybody else on that bill,” Shaddix said. “We’ve never been on a proper tour with Godsmack, so this will be the first time… we’ve done shows with them. We did a tour with Staind, and those are our homeys. I’m really ex about being out there with P.O.D. Those are my dudes, man. And the guys in Shinedown, I’ve got nothing but love and respect for those guys. It’s going to be a great way to spend the summer…”

Rob Caggiano, the lead guitarist for the thrash-masters Anthrax, checked in with Loudwire today (May 20) before the band’s set at this year’s Rock on the Range Festival in Columbus, Ohio.

The topics of conversation included a possible ‘Big 4′ tour, what Anthrax has in store for Mayhem fest and the details on a the strange story heard earlier this year about frontman Joey Belladonna accidentally getting tackled by security guards at an Anthrax show in L.A. Caggiano fills us in on the details and sets the record straight.

A couple months ago Joey [Belladonna] got tackled at a show, what was the deal with that?

Yeah that was in L.A., this one guy ran up onstage and Joey went to give him a hug just be cool with the kid and these two big f—in’ security guys went to tackle the guy that ran onstage. Joey was attached to him so they both got tackled and Joey actually landed on the bottom so it was a f—ing pile up. It was crazy, it happened right during my solo, I didn’t even see it.

Anthrax has a special set in store for Mayhem Fest, you’re doing that tonight too, right?

Well we’re doing a shorter set tonight than what we’re use too, we’ve been doing headlining shows for the past few months so it’s going to be a shorter set. I don’t know what we’re playing exactly, we didn’t really talk about it yet. The set length is the same today as it’s going to be on Mayhem Fest.

Are you excited about that festival, it’s a pretty good lineup.

Oh yeah, it’s gonna be awesome. It’s gonna be a blast.

You were part of the Big 4, did a couple of shows. Do you think you are ever going to tour together or is that just too much to organize with everybody’s schedule?

I don’t know, you gotta ask Lars [Ulrich] and James [Hetfield]. If they say they want to do it we’ll all be there.

As Danish rockers Volbeat make their first appearance at the annual Rock on the Range Festival today (May 20) in Columbus, Ohio, drummer Jon Larsen took some time to sit down and check in with Loudwire.

Larsen chatted all about Volbeat’s recent accomplishments, the continued search for a new guitarist for the band and potentially heading back into the studio later this year to record a new album.

Shortly after Rock on the Range, Volbeat will be kicking off their summer tour in June with Iced Earth and Hellyeah so there was plenty to talk about.

You guys have been big for while overseas right?

For about two, two and a half years.

Is it a lot different with success, do you see the change in the crowds?

Maybe a little bit, when you cross over the crowds switch from being a few metal heads or a few punk heads and they will probably leave but more people come in. That’s the way it is.

You guys went with an interesting strategy. After your number one hit, you went back an album to pick the single ‘Still Counting.’ What was the idea behind that because it’s a pretty unconventional move.

Well, actually I have no idea why. I’ve asked myself that question a lot of times and I don’t know why. Maybe because some radio station picked it up because it’s been one of the favorite live songs -  so maybe that’s why. Maybe it’s got a good hook to it, a good rhythm, apart from that I really don’t know. It seems to be going very well, so somebody was right.

The band recently parted ways with your guitarist, have you picked up anybody else in his place yet?

Well we have Hank Shermann from Mercyful Fate who’s touring with us right now as the stand in for the next guy but we haven’t picked a permanent guy yet.

Are you lookin’ for somebody?

Yes we are.

Were you playing as a three piece for a while?

It was only a few shows here and there because of visa trouble but yes, we’ve done it a few times. It’s not ideal, but we do it.

What’s next for Volbeat? Do you have a new single planned after this one?

For that I don’t know, the only thing that I know is we’re definitely going to be touring a lot more here in America. We’re going out on tour with Hellyeah and Iced Earth later this summer. We’re going to do a major festival in Europe in August and then hopefully into the studio later this year to record the next album, but that’s pretty far away right now.

It’s been a busy year for Chicago punk rockers Rise Against. They have been touring almost non-stop with A Day to Remember throughout the world, and will make a few appearances at the Vans Warped Tour during the summer. The band apparently hates resting because they have announced a string of fall dates in continued support of their sixth studio album, Endgame, and Grand Rapids is one of them.

New Jersey’s Gaslight Anthem and Florida-based rockers Hot Water Music will open most of the shows. The trek kicks off September 11 in Quebec, Canada and runs through October 7 in Edmonton, Canada. Rise Against will headline the DeltaPlex Arena in Grand Rapids on September 17. The band will perform at Riot Fest 2012 in Chicago prior to the GR date. See the full list of new dates below.

It’s hard not to envy LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell (Just hear us out, OK?). Not only do they reap ungodly amounts of cash and fame playing cops & robbers on CBS (Which I know is a network, because Nana Moody says it is), they also get to hang out with Portugese-American goddess Daniela Ruah every day.

Ruah plays Special Agent Kensi Blye on ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ (which we like to call “that mega-popular show that no one I know watches”). She’s probably the only reason we’ve tuned in to watch the ‘NCIS’ spinoff every now and then. We can’t deny the allure of a tall, tough, sexy leading lady who shoots big ass guns and trashes sports cars.

The lovely 28-year-old actress, who has a distinguishable birthmark in her right eye, was born in Boston but was raised in her parents’ home country of Portugal. After graduating from London Metropolitan University, Ruah became a film and TV star in Portugal, where she won the country’s version of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2005.

Ruah, who speaks Portugese, Spanish and (of course) English, moved to New York to study acting in 2007 and landed the role of Kensi Blye on ‘NCIS: LA’ two years later. The show just wrapped one of its biggest events – a two-part crossover with CBS’ ‘Hawaii Five-0’ revamp.

If you haven’t caught Ruah on the small screen yet, don’t worry, her show isn’t going anywhere. ‘NCIS: LA’ is still one of the TV’s top-rated series. Here’s hoping CBS pulls the trigger on our Special Agent Blye –centered spinoff idea: ‘NCIS: South Beach.’

Slash has been on quite the roll recently. The guitarist was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month with his old Guns N’ Roses bandmates (minus Axl Rose). His new album, Apocalyptic Love, drops in stores next Tuesday (May 22) and is currently touring with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators to promote the record. Check out our photo gallery from their show at the Orbit Room last night (May 17).

Slash and Co. played for over 90 minutes, keeping the crowd captivated the entire time. They performed tracks from the forthcoming Apocalyptic Love and Slash’s previous self-titled solo debut. Proving that he knows his roots, Slash and his band dug into the icon’s back catalog and played a few Guns N’ Roses hits like “Night Train” and “Paradise City.” They even busted out some tunes from Slash’s other band, Velvet Revolver. Alter Bridge frontman Kennedy did an admirable job filling in for Axl Rose and former VR singer Scott Weiland.

Another interesting note to point out is the special guests that Slash had up on the V.I.P. balcony. Members of Rob Zombie‘s crew were in town for their GRD show tonight at the DeltaPlex Arena with Megadeth. While we didn’t personally see Zombie himself, his guitarist John 5 was there to enjoy the show.

The death of Beastie Boys emcee Adam Yauch hit a lot of people hard, but there were some fans who immediately rallied to make sure that the man also known as MCA would get his day in his hometown of New York.

On May 11, both a Twitter and Facebook page went live with plans for an “MCA Day,” and organizer Michael Kearney is happy to announce that it will become a reality at New York’s Union Square this Saturday (May 19). Kearney posted a photo via Facebook of a subway train and stated, “Picture an NYC Subway car full of all types and walks of life … singing Beastie Boys songs in unison. That’s my vision for MCA DAY NYC. I’m going to build that. Thanks for the support. That train’s a coming.”

MCA Day will kick off at 11:00AM ET in New York’s Union Square this Saturday, and everyone attending is encouraged to bring songs, memories, and anything else they feel will pay tribute to Yauch’s life.

Meanwhile, New York State Senator Daniel Squadron also made sure that Yauch was recognized on the legislative floor. He drafted a resolution that was heard and adopted by his fellow politicians. Resolution J4637-2011 recognizes Yauch’s many contributions to the state of New York, and while it stops short of declaring an official MCA Day in New York, it did allow the politicians a chance to take a break from their proceedings and honor his memory with the reading of the resolution.

In the resolution, it reads, “The music and message of the Beastie Boys evolved over the years, but they can’t, they don’t, they won’t stop changing the face of hip-hop, of music, and of our culture; and whereas, the Beastie Boys exemplified New York through a period in which grassroots creativity and a community of iconoclastic artists helped redefine and rejuvenate a city on the ropes, with iconic imagery from Brooklyn to Ludlow Street.”

The resolution also addresses Yauch’s work outside the band with the charitable organization Milarepa, as the founder of the film distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, and his life as a family man and activist. The full resolution was transmitted to Yauch’s family. The full text may be read via the New York Senate’s Open Access database.

Black Sabbath are taking the high road after Bill Ward‘s recent lengthy statement about his non-participation in their reunion.

The group issued a statement late Thursday that read, “We have decided not to make any detailed comment on Bill’s latest statement. There are two sides to every story. We have been working hard at rehearsals making excellent progress after Tony’s treatments and we have engaged a substitute drummer for the forthcoming shows. See you at Download.”

In his statement earlier this week, Ward revealed that he and the other members of Black Sabbath had failed to come to terms on a contract for the reunion. The drummer felt that it was important that he stand up for himself where the band was concerned, but felt horrible that he was letting the fans down as a result. “I know in my heart, I couldn’t have done these concerts by agreeing to the terms suggested,” explained Ward.

He also added that he had been offered a chance to “minimally” play, while sharing the drumkit with another drummer during Black Sabbath sets, but was not willing to sit back and watch another musician play while he was only allowed on three songs.

Ward revealed that he learned about the band’s summer plans through an advertisement for the shows, and realized then that a signable contract was not going to be presented. He concluded, “I didn’t want to make this decision, but I have to be transparent and honest.” As for future work with the band, he says he still has an open mind and a willingness to negotiate a “signable” contract.

Following the news last week of several new shows added, things seem to have gone south for Van Halen since then. Without much explanation, the legendary rock band just announced that they’ll be postponing all remaining tour dates after their June 26 show in New Orleans, La. With over 30 dates being postponed, the dates impacted start on July 7 in Uncasville, Conn. and span through a Sept. 25 gig in Milwaukee. This obviously means that the July 26 Van Andel Arena show is also canned for now.

According to Pollstar, the band has already removed all of the dates from their website. However as of right now, the shows are only being postponed, hinting that they will be rescheduled at a later date.

Markets affected by the postponements include: Philadelphia, Baltimore,  Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Memphis, Spokane, Reno, Fresno and Wichita, just to name a few.

No particular reason has been given for the postponements, yet Rolling Stone reports that sources say the bandmembers “hate each other” and that they are “arguing like mad.”

Van Halen still have active tour dates running through May and June that have not been impacted by this turn of events, check out all the dates below including the postponed ones.

Van Halen are currently touring in support of ‘A Different Kind of Truth,’ their first album with singer David Lee Roth since ’1984.’
