A California woman suffering from the blood cancer multiple myeloma was removed from a flight from Hawaii to California while she was trying to return from vacation.

She boarded the aircraft, putting on a surgical mask because her cancer makes her susceptible to illness.

Once the crew on the Alaska Airlines flight saw that, they removed her -- citing airline policy. She was told she was not allowed to fly without a note from her doctor, and the airline found her a hotel and rebooked her flights.

Initially, Alaska Airlines said the family was on the hook for the additional expenses. But after coming to its senses, the company paid, San Francisco's KPIX-TV reported.

While that was admirable, they should have fixed the problem immediately after removing the woman from the flight.
