Michigan Laws For Person Biting Off Part of Another Person's Body
When people hear about someone being bitten, they usually assume it involves a dog attack. However, that is not always the case. In some situations, a person may bite another person in self-defense when they are being attacked and fear for their life, using it as a means of survival.
In Michigan, biting off a part of another person's body is generally prosecuted as mayhem, or assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. These are severe felonies with significant prison penalties.
According to the Michigan Legislature, mayhem applies to maliciously intending to maim or disfigure someone, including cutting or tearing off an ear, mutilating the nose or lip, or cutting off a limb or organ.
Assault with intent to do great bodily harm is biting off a part of a body with intent to cause serious, but not fatal injury.
