As much as I love the atmosphere and general vibe that comes with winter and the holidays, there is one thing every Michigander can agree really sucks: winter driving. Icy roads, snowy days where the plows just can't keep up, whatever it is, driving in the winter can be a nightmare.

And while some vehicles are more prepared for winter driving than others, there are things you can do to increase your car's ability to stay on the road. But there is one thing you really can't do no matter how effective it is.

Legal Ways To Improve Driving

Besides our many hard-working snow plow drivers working early mornings to make our commutes easier, there are things you can do yourself to make your driving safer.

Many people will recommend various improvements involving tires, the most common suggestion being to get winter tires. Winter tires are tires that have patterns with wide tread grooves with sharp-angled tread blocks that allow for a better grip on snow.

Keeping cat litter in the trunk, breaking earlier to provide plenty of room to slow down, and putting on tire chains to your vehicles are other ways to help. Tire chains, chains one puts on their tires to provide extra traction to a tire in snow, are legal. A more permanent solution to chains, however, is not.

Tire Spikes Are A BIG No-No!

While tire chains are perfectly legal in the state of Michigan, tire spikes are not. Tire spikes are a specific kind of tire with studs/spikes that can be installed into the tire for increased traction in snowy conditions. These types of tires, however, are not allowed due to the damage they can cause Michigan roads.
