There are areas of Michigan that certain times of the year have an off smell in the air but why are Michiganders complaining that the east side of the state smells like poop?

On my drive to work on 131, I pass by a landfill in Pierson and it smells all year long. Sometimes, it's terrible, and other times, it's less strong. The same thing happens when driving to Hoffmaster Beach on 96 going through Coopersville by the landfill gets pretty ripe. The rest of Pierson and Coopersville are great communities and you don't notice the foul landfill odor unless you live or dive near them.

Why Are Michiganders Saying the East Side of State Smells Like Poop?

I live in a farm area and sometimes the farmers use manure on the fields and it gets rank for a little while then goes away. Not sure if that is what is going on in Metro Detroit to Ann Arbor but Michiganders are saying it smells like poop.

The original post on this Reddit thread came from "Odd_Author_76" that said, "It smells like poop again!" So obviously this has been a problem lately. The first response from "treeefingers" gave a great explanation, "Cold front winds blow from a different direction than normal/warm fronts like the one we've been having. Might be the same deal - it's supposed to cool down tomorrow, so we're potentially getting a cold front that is blowing the smell from farms out west/northwest of Detroit." That sounds like a pretty good explanation.

Several Reddit posters pointed out they live in one town and work in another and smell poop in both places while others blame it on lazy dog owners.

On a separate post on the Detroit Reddit page poster "tapnerd" said, "Anyone else notice the bad smell in the air this morning?" I scrolled down on the thread and poster "juliecroff02" said, "The smell of ginkgo trees in Michigan is often described as rancid butter or vomit, and is most noticeable in late autumn." These trees from China are non-invasive and can grow in Michigan but it would take a lot of them to cause the smell that is going on the east side of the state. Immediately after that post "flying_2_heave" said, "Probably manure."

After reading all these posts on both threads the culprit sounds like manure. I will remind you that some farmers get human waste from water treatment plants and that can be much worse and the smell will last longer than animal waste.
