Where’s the Baby Boom?
If you're like me, you might have been "expecting" a baby boom. With the pandemic and people stuck at home with nothing to do...ideal hands etc...we're a full 10 months into this new normal and where are all the new borns?
Experts are saying there are actually less babies being born during the pandemic. Dr. John LaGrand of Advanced OB-GYN of Grand Rapids says not so fast. When speaking with WOOD TV, Doctor Lagrand said,
“A lot of women voted very realistically to say, ‘Wait a minute, not right now. I don’t know where this is going and this is not what I want to bring a baby into."
In November of 2019, Metro Health-University of Michigan Health reports the birth of 144 babies in West Michigan. This year has paced even lower with 116 births. The Brookings Institute claims next year will show a similar birthrate decline of 7-10% which equates nationally to half a million less babies. A survey done by the Guttmacker Institute found that 34% of women said they wanted to get pregnant later or wanted fewer children because of the Covid 19 pandemic. Fertility in the US has recently hit an all time 35 year low.
Driven by economic and social instability, this boom is a bust!
