A Knights Inn in Kalamazoo has been purchased with plans to turn it into affordable housing but not before helping people suffering from homelessness stay warm through the winter.

The motel was bought by the LIFT Foundation as a way to help with the housing crisis. Vice President David Anderson tells FOX 17,

There is a housing crisis in this country which did not just happen yesterday. Kalamazoo is not immune from that. It was the idea of what about buying an existing motel, and ultimately here is the plan: totally renovating it and turning it into 60 studio apartments, in other words, permanent housing from that."

It's a plan that has been in the making for two years. Construction won't begin until April and when completed will total a $4 million project. Currently, the hotel is housing homeless through the colder months but when finished the hotel will be transformed into 60 studio apartments.

As plans finalize the LIFT foundation will release more information. They are taking contractor bids now but soon will let people know how to apply for residency. The LIFT foundation hopes to have the project completed by December 2021. The Knight's Inn hotel is located at 1211 S. Westnedge Avenue.
