Three major franchise groups stand out, each owning hundreds of Wendy’s locations. The Flynn Group owns and operates more than 300 restaurants, while WKS Restaurant Group operates nearly 400 stores.

Let’s focus on Meritage Hospitality Group, a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based company that operates more than 300 restaurants across multiple states. The company is facing financial challenges, raising questions about whether some of its Wendy’s locations could eventually close or change ownership.

Wendy's Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Of its more than 300 locations, Meritage Hospitality Group owns and operates 54 Wendy’s restaurants in Michigan alone. Meritage told shareholders that Wendy’s is facing a major brand crisis, compounded by soaring beef prices. Together, those challenges have contributed to Wendy’s posting its weakest financial performance in roughly 30 years.

WOOD TV8 reports that Meritage Hospitality Group has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, putting the future of more than 300 Wendy’s locations in question. The franchise group has already trimmed its operations, closing 57 restaurants and eliminating “unprofitable breakfast service” at 164 locations. However, those cost-cutting measures have not been enough to prevent the company from seeking bankruptcy protection.

Meritage says it will continue operating its restaurants as usual throughout the bankruptcy process and plans to continue paying its more than 9,000 employees. The company hopes the restructuring will give the business a chance to recover and return to long-term financial stability.
