Want to See a 6-Foot, 3-Inch Fish Caught in Michigan?
Michigan is one of the best states for freshwater fishing and there are some big fish in the Great Lakes and inland waters. See a 6-foot, 3-inch fish that is a perfect example.
Michigan Has Big Fish
You haven't lived until you latch onto a Chinook salmon in the Great Lakes. These bad boys range from 20 to 30 pounds and the state record is a hair over 48 pounds. That's a fish that can peel some line.
Can you imagine if a Michigan muskellunge were to grab onto your hand or ankle? Ouch! Musky get huge in the Great Lakes with the current state record being 67 pounds 8 ounces. These fish take a long time to grow and be 45 inches before you can keep one. It's best to take some great photos and turn one loose if you catch one.
Flathead catfish get huge in Michigan rivers and the Great Lakes. The state record was caught in the St. Joseph River in Southwest Michigan weighed over 53 pounds and was 48 inches long. That is what you call a hog.
Carp get huge in Michigan and are in just about every body of water. I used to fish for them in downtown Flint and have caught some as long as my leg. Big head carp can get up to 5 feet long and weigh 90 pounds.
I didn't even mention lake trout, northern pike, burbot, and brown trout that all get very big too. One fish is the biggest in Michigan and can be over 6 feet in length and weigh over 200 pounds.

There is one more beast of a fish that lurks in Michigan waters that gets bigger than all the other fish I previously mentioned.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources fishery staff do an annual lake sturgeon survey where they catch, gather data, tag, and release the fish. The bad boy in the picture above was the largest ever caught during a survey on Lake St. Clair. This sturgeon was 75.2 inches and weighed 125 pounds. It's a freaking dinosaur.
To give you an idea of how much bigger lake sturgeon get in Michigan, the state record was caught on Mullett Lake in 1974 weighed 193 pounds, and was 88 inches long. Now that's a whopper!
