I like hiking as much as the next guy. It's nice to get out, be in nature, and maybe see a squirrel or a deer (or something far more exciting). One of my favorite hiking memories was when my friends and I went up to the UP and skinny-dipped on some random hike in Houghton.

TMI? Maybe. But anything can happen on a hike.

However, I'm not bold enough to do a multiple-day hike, let alone over 120 miles spread across four days. But one man decided to do just that and hiked the entire Huron-Manistee National Forest from North to South.

Huron-Manistee National Forest

The Huron-Manistee National Forest takes up a hefty chunk (nearly one million acres!) of Northwest Michigan. The national forest offers year-round activities such as camping, hiking, biking, skiing, and other fun activities.

The forest is also home to endangered and sensitive species like the Kirtland's Warbler, Piping Plover, Karner Blue Butterfly, and the Pitcher's Thistle (you can see these animals below).

Joe Hollowed's 120 Mile Trek

Over on the r/CampAndHikeMichigan Subreddit, user pretzlstyle aka Joe Hollowed according to his Instagram is a graduate student at the University of Michigan and wanted to tackle his favorite trail one more time before he moved away.

Tackle it he did. Starting at the Hodenpyl Dam and ending in White CloudJoe hiked 120 miles in 4 days, averaging 30 miles a day and walking ~12 hours a day. He made a very extensive post detailing his entire trip, with timing, distance, how he prepared, what gear he used, etc. The whole endeavor is pretty impressive.

Lots of planning went into this trip, and it isn't for light of heart. You can view photos from Joe's solo-trip here.
