Two Outdoor Climbing Structures Are Expected to Open At a Grand Rapids Park
If you like to climb or have ever thought of taking up climbing, next month two brand new outdoor climbing structures will be open to the public at a Grand Rapids park.
What is an Outdoor Climbing Structure?
So what the heck is an outdoor climbing wall? It is basically an artificially constructed wall that has objects attached to it that you can use your hands and feet to help climb the structure. It simulates rock climbing, especially for those who don't live near structures for actual rock climbing.
There are a variety of wall types artificially built for climbers. Some are made of brick or wood. Most of the newer walls used are made with multiplex board. The walls will have places to attach your climbing ropes to simulate actual rock climbing.
These types of walls are used for practicing for actual rock climbing but many use them as a source of exercise since you lift your actual body weight while climbing.
Many of the walls that are built have a textured surface that is made of concrete and paint or polyurethane that is loaded with sand. Sometimes there are handholds or even intentions or bulges to grab on to. The grips are set up to mimic the conditions of outdoor rock.
Where Type of Outdoor Climbing Wall Be in Grand Rapids?
A group called the Grand Rapids Boulder Project has built two very sizable structures from wood that climbers will be able to scale. These structures are roughly one story tall and will be surrounded by fall-friendly padding in case of a fall. The routes will be changed routinely to make the experience different for those who visit the walls often.
What Grand Rapids Park Will Have Outdoor Climbing Walls?
According to WOOD, the climbing walls will be located at Highland Park along Grand Avenue NE.
