Every year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) releases the most popular baby names in the country and by state. Today, it has released the top 100 names in the US and Michigan. So, before we look at 2024's most popular names, let's refresh on 2023's most popular names. Note: all information is based on Social Security card application data.

2023's Most Popular Baby Names

In 2023, the top five most popular boys' names in Michigan were Noah (457), Oliver (451), Henry (411), Theodore (409), and Liam (384)For girls, the top five most popular girls' names were Charlotte (428), Amelia (395), Olivia (369), Sophia (337), and Emma (312)You can view the full list here.

Across the United States, 2023's top ten boys' names were Liam, Noah, Oliver, James, Elijah, Mateo, Theodore, Henry, Lucas, and William. For girls, the top names were Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Mia, Isabella, Ava, Evelyn, and Luna. As you can see, there is a lot of overlap here, a trend carried into 2024. 2024's Most Popular Baby Names

There aren't too many changes from 2023. In Michigan, the top names for boys were Noah (488), Theodore (469), Oliver (454), Henry (428)and Liam (407)while the top names for girls were Charlotte (382), Amelia (377), Olivia (316), Emma (313), and Evelyn (299)The only change from last year was that Evelyn overtook Sophia in the top 5, and the order of the rankings. Nationwide, Liam and Olivia were once again the most popular names. For boys, the top names are Liam, Noah, Oliver, Theodore, James, Henry, Mateo, Elijah, Lucas, and William. For girls, the top names are Olivia, Emma, Amelia, Charlotte, Mia, Sophia, Isabella, Evelyn, Ava, and Sofia. You can view the top 20 names here.

Outside of a change in popularity rankings from 2023 to 2024, this year stands out because two variations - Sophia and Sofia - made the top 10. Luna fell out of the top 10 to 13th.
