This week the state of Michigan has shut down 40 medical marijuana shops across the state in an effort to crack down on businesses not operating within state compliance.

According to the Free Press, the businesses are being shut down by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs because they haven’t submitted paperwork for a license with the state and are currently operating illegally.

It looks like most of the 40 cease and desist letters went to dispensaries that had not filed for a license at the beginning of the year.

David Harns, who works for the department responsible for the notices told the Free Press,

"Any business that didn't apply for a license by Feb. 15 isn't in compliance with the emergency rules that were set up. We did 40 today all throughout the state and there will be hundreds more."
