Mario games are usually a home run when it comes to video games. However, back in the late 1988, a highly anticipated sequel to the insanely popular Super Mario Bros. arrived on the scene. It was definitely not what gamers expected when they popped in that cartridge into their NES. Even though it is a huge departure from what made the original so great, the game is still a lot of fun.

It's crazy, but I do remember playing this game for the first time ever. My first home I lived in was this HUGE ass blue house on the corner of Leonard and Oakleigh, and I remember my brothers friend Tim coming over and he had this game named Super Mario Bros. 2. I just remember it being a crazy game.

Over the years, my love for this game has grown massively. While everyone else that plays the game either loves it or hates it. If you don't know the history of why this game is so different, here is a quick rundown.

Super Mario Bros. 2, is not ACTUALLY Super Mario Bros. 2. It's a game called 'Doki Doki Panic.' A game that was only released in Japan. Nintendo figured that the actual Super Mario Bros. 2 was deemed 'difficult' for American gamers. So they took out the characters of Doki Doki Panic and replaced them with Mario characters, while leaving most of the Doki Doki Panic stuff still the same. The true Super Mario Bros. 2 didn't see any kind of release in America until the Super Nintendo days where they released Super Mario All-Stars, which had a game titles 'Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels.' Which, you guessed it, is actually the real Super Mario Bros. 2.

Regardless of what is the true Super Mario Bros. 2, the American Super Mario Bros. 2 is still one of my favorite Mario games. Throwing vegetables, tossing the door potions to find the mushrooms, climbing vines, defeating the bosses, it's all a lot of fun. I am happy that Nintendo decided to release Super Mario Bros. 2 this way. Have you ever tried the real Super Mario Bros. 2? It's insanely difficult! So difficult that I actually don't find it fun after a bit because all I do is die!

Super Mario Bros. 2 did make a big impact on the Mario world though. In this game, we were introduced to franchise mainstays like Snifits, Birdo, POW Blocks, etc. Birdo alone has been in a bunch of Mario titles after this game!

If someone was to give me a choice of a NES Mario game to play, it would go like this.

  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros.

Why Super Mario Bros. 3? That damn game is fantastic!
