There was a serious boat crash on Muskegon Lake but after witnessing some of the boat activity the accident was sadly not a surprise.

Sadly a Boat Crash on Muskegon Lake Was Not a Surprise

My son and I were trying to catch some walleye on Muskegon Lake over the weekend and there were a lot of playboats on the water with many disregarding the lake rules when entering boat docks, ramps, and small harbors. There are no wake zones all over the lake. My 11-year-old son even said these boats are flying into the no-wake zones and don't seem safe. He was right.

Just before it was dark a father and mother were towing their kids behind a speedboat and were not paying attention and I had to stand up in my boat and wave my hands and yell to get their attention to get them to avoid hitting our boat. Countless boats were driving erratically all evening into the night. It was so bad I probably won't go fishing there anymore it just felt too dangerous.

Since we were fishing at night we used some large buoys with lights that marked a channel where the boat ramp was where we parked. There was a huge party going on near this channel that had boats flying in and out the whole time were we there and we fished in the area for 5 hours. Then we heard a speed boat flying toward this channel and I told my son I couldn't believe how fast this boat was going toward that channel. We could hear the motor roaring and then crunching and no more motor running.

I said to my son, I think that boat crashed but it was so dark but then I noticed there were only two buoys with lights on them. If you see the orange triangle above the boat pictured above the buoy is behind the boat and the light is now out.

I don't know if anyone was hurt but emergency vehicles showed up on land. When we got closer to the boat the police told us to move away so we did. We decided to call it a day but both decided this would be our last visit to the lake. That buoy that was hit could have easily been our boat and it stood 10 feet out of the water with a light that flashed on top with a big orange warning triangle. I was surprised none of the news outlets covered this crash but wasn't surprised since it happened in a very affluent harbor where the elite was holding a gathering. I sure hope no one on the boat was injured or even worse died from the accident.

LOOK: Lake Michigan Beach Named One of the Best 'Secret' Beaches in U.S.

Northern Michigan's South Manitou Island has been named among the best 20 "secret" beaches in the U.S. by Southern Living Magazine.

Within Sleeping Bear Dune's National Lakeshore, South and North Manitou Island are part of an island chain in Lake Michigan that extends north to the Straits of Mackinac.

According to the National Park Service, "The island consists of a ridge of tilted layers of limestone, buried under a blanket of glacial debris. It features unique sand dune formations, 10 miles of beaches, and a grove of old growth white cedars that date back over 500 years."
