Power Trip came out of the 2017 Loudwire Music Awards with their national television debut and a trophy of Tony Iommi’s hand. It was a hell of a night for the powerhouse thrashers, so we caught up with the group after they won for "Best Metal Song."

Hailing from Texas, Power Trip have been grinding it out for almost 10 years. 2017 has been their breakout year with Nightmare Logic already being hailed as essential listening by the metal underground. It was those very fans that delivered Power Trip their "Hand of Doom," with the "Best Metal Song" category being 100-percent determined by fan streams via Apple Music.

“It’s just kind of surreal for all of us,” vocalist Riley Gale said in the PRS Backstage Artist Lounge. “I think we started this band to kind of have an excuse to see the world, maybe go to Europe and Australia and Japan or something. I never thought, when I would daydream as a kid about being in a band, that I would be at an awards ceremony … and we won, which is crazy. We’re just rolling with it.”

During Power Trip’s performance of “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe)” at the ceremony, the band had chaotic imagery of the world’s many conflicts playing behind them, including the infamous footage of white nationalist Richard Spencer getting punched. “We weren’t just attacking the right,” Gale points out. “It was kind of an all-encompassing ‘shit is fucked’ kind of situation.”

“But also, fuck that dude,” drummer Chris Ulsh adds about Richard Spencer. “Yeah, fuck that dude,” agrees Gale. “That guy deserved to get punched.”
