New Grand Rapids Wine Bar Wants to Take the Intimidation Out of Wine
Over the past few years, Grand Rapids has said goodbye to several wine bars. Since 2024, spots like GR Noir, House of Wine, and Forty Pearl have all closed in downtown Grand Rapids. Now, there is a new place aiming to fill that gap for wine drinkers looking for something more approachable and experience-driven.

A new wine bar and retail hybrid has officially opened on Grand Rapids' Medical Mile, and it is stepping into a space that has seen plenty of turnover over the years.
A New Chapter for a Familiar Space
Pauly's Wine Experience opened its doors this past weekend at 855 Michigan St. NE, near Houseman Avenue in the former Maggie's Bar space. Prior to that, the building was home to Flatlanders.
The concept combines a wine bar and bottle shop under one roof, with a private tasting space called The Backroom available for reservations.

Meet the Man Behind Pauly's Wine Experience
Owner Paul Faba has spent nearly 30 years in the wine industry, including work in international markets and consulting. The goal, he says, is to make wine feel less intimidating and more accessible to everyday drinkers.

Wine Without the Intimidation
As Faba told WOOD TV 8, "Wine is communal. It's conversation. It's for the rich, the poor, everything. This is a place for everybody."
Affordability is also a major part of the concept. Speaking with WOOD TV 8, Faba said he believes wine has become too expensive and overly complicated for many consumers. He pointed to the high markups often found at bars and restaurants, saying they can discourage people from trying new wines.
