Logan is the end of an era for two actors’ portrayal of two beloved characters: We’ve known for a while that Hugh Jackman was bowing out after this movie, and last week Patrick Stewart also announced that he was done playing Charles Xavier after the send-off he gets in the final Wolverine movie. These decisions obviously aren’t reckless larks made after one too many drinks, but maaaybe Stewart is thinking he spoke too soon.

In a recent live interview with MTV, the conversation veered towards the Deadpool movies and what Stewart makes of those. Apparently he likes them, because at the end of the stream, Stewart said he might not be done with Professor X just yet.

I would have said yes, but the discussion just now about Deadpool makes me think, well, maybe there is a proper justification for the revival of Charles Xavier.

The way the X-Men movies are now, Deadpool and its sequel are the only two that take place in the present. All the others are set in the past, the future, or days of future past. The merc with a mouth is entirely capable of visiting the X-Mansion to throw a few jabs at any mutants he happens to come across, Professor X included, so it’s entirely possible Stewart could return to the franchise, even if it was a small cameo. Considering the timeline of the series, by now the character would look more like Stewart than James McAvoy anyway.

And as the world of film and professional sports has taught us, time and again, when a star says they’re done with something, there’s a 50/50 chance that’ll be proven wrong in a few months to a year. Looking at you, Miyazaki.
