Jersey Mike's Continues to Expand

One of the original names in the submarine sandwich game, Jersey Mike's Subs, is continuing its steady expansion and West Michigan is very much on the map. If it feels like you’re seeing more of their shops pop up lately, you’re not wrong.

The brand’s roots go all the way back to 1956, when it first opened as Mike’s Subs in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. It took a major turn in 1975 when a 17-year-old employee, Peter Cancro, bought the business with help from his high school football coach. From there, he grew it into the nationwide chain we know today, eventually rebranding it as Jersey Mike’s and leaning into a classic East Coast sub shop feel.

That reputation has stuck. Jersey Mike’s is known for slicing meats and cheeses fresh to order, piling them onto bread that’s baked daily, and serving up everything from cold subs to hot, grilled cheesesteaks.

Regulars will tell you the move is ordering your sandwich “Mike’s Way” loaded with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, red wine vinegar, olive oil, and a signature spice blend.

Now, about those new restaurants. One location recently opened at 6260 28th Street SE in Cascade, taking over a former Subway space near Thornapple Brewing Company. To mark the opening, they’re offering a deal through March 31, use code RAPIDS05 to score free chips and a drink with the purchase of a sub.

Another new shop Jersey Mike's opened earlier this month 6670 Kalamazoo Avenue SE in Grand Rapids. There's also another on the way. According to Jersey Mike's website, a restaurant at 5135 Lake Michigan Dr. in Allendale is opening soon.
