Dearborn's Tint Crusade

Tinted windows have been an ongoing issue for officers for years but much of the time there are bigger fish to fry than get someone for the tint on their car. However, the Dearborn Police Department has decided enough is enough and has ticketed over 800 people since Christmas.

So far, this crackdown is focused on the east side of the state, but considering how aggressively law enforcement is targeting tinted windows, it may be time to consider removing it to be proactive. Dearborn Police Chief Issa ShaChin says, "I don't see us stopping anytime soon."

How Much Tint Is Ok?

If you're reading this and are worried that your window tint is illegal, don't worry. Most tint is legal. MI Legislature Section 257.709 outlines the specifics regarding tints:

  • Tint is allowed on the top edge of the front and rear windshields and front side windows if the material does not extend more than 4 inches from the top.
  • The rear and side windows must not have more than 35% solar reflectance.
  • Any amount of darkness is allowed on the back side windows and rear windows.

Police officers are charging drivers with impaired driving. Comments on Dearborn's Instagram page point out a double standard by officers, saying "Don't police cars have tinted windows?" and people saying tinted windows are the least of people's problems.
