For most of my adult life in Michigan, when someone the family knew was retiring, it usually meant they would spend the colder months in Florida. As I got older, many retirees headed to Arizona during the colder months. Those retirees did so in Florida or Arizona during colder months but lived in Michigan the rest of the year were known as "Snowbirds."
Michigan has become an appealing destination for retirees looking to settle in one place year-round. With milder winters brought on by climate change, the state’s climate is now more comfortable throughout the year. Surrounded on nearly all sides by the Great Lakes, Michigan boasts an expansive coastline and stunning natural beauty. Offering all four distinct seasons and countless attractions, it’s a place where retirees could spend a lifetime exploring everything the state has to offer.

U.S. News, which is a real estate and home website, recently put together the top 250 places to retire. It seems that snowbirds are electing to stay in their home state of Michigan rather than retire in Florida, Arizona or elsewhere.
