In Michigan We Got Smarts Real Good, Except We Also Don’t
There is no doubt that Michigander's are the brightest people. We are so smart. Smarter than most even...except when there are facts and figures that say we aren't.
Where does Michigan rank nationally for the quality of its schools and its rate of high achievers? Oh no. We're in the bottom half of the list for the country.
Wallet Hub listed the states from most to least educated. Out of the 50 states, Michigan crosses the half way mark and grabbed the #25th spot.
While it’s possible to make a respectable living without a degree, higher education generally leads to higher income — and a lower chance of being unemployed. 32% of Michigan adults have a bachelor's degree or better. That is lower than the national average.
A respectable number of residents do finish high school and pick up a degree. However, you aren’t guaranteed a great education in the Great Lake State. It ranks 35 out of 50 for overall quality.
Yes, we have some great schools in Michigan. But, the University of Michigan was the only school that made it to a Forbes’ list ranking schools. The Wolverines came in at #20 and no other schools in the state cracked the top 150 for good schools.

Job prospects for graduates in Michigan aren’t so hot. In 2019, the average unemployment rate was higher than the national average, at 4.1%. In 2021, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget reported the jobless rate was up to 5.6%.
Massachusetts ranked #1 on the list for brightest and most educated in the country.
West Virginia ranked at #50 with the least amount of college grads.
By the way, students who began their academic career this year, are slated to graduate high school in 2034. They could be college graduates by 2038.
