Food Network Has Named This the Most Iconic Food in Michigan
There's no shortage of food that's special to Michigan. There's Detroit Style Pizza, Coney Dogs, Mackinac Island Fudge, Better Made Chips, Kelloggs Cereal, McClure's Pickles, Pasties, Paczki, Whitefish, Olive Burgers - not to mention all the wonderful produce grown here: Asparagus, Apples, Blueberries, Cherries... the list goes on!
But what item would you say defines the Mitten State?

When it comes to sandwiches, foodie publication Lovefood.com recently named Michigan's top one the Ham Sandwich.
Well, Food Network went on a mission to determine the Most Iconic Food in all 50 States. They say these must-try dishes are packed with iconic local flavors that share its history and define its geography.

Food Network's pick for the most iconic Michigan food is - the pasty.
According to the publication, The Cornish invented the pasty, but when Cornish copper miners from emigrated to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the meat pies took on new characteristics. The Finnish later adopted pasties and claimed them as their own.
A staple in the U.P., each year the Pasty Fest is held in the Keweenaw Peninsula village of Calumet.

Food Network shouts out Lawry's, a family-owned pasty shop in Marquette that opened in 1946.
At Lawry's you'll find the traditional pasty - stuffed with beef, potato, onion and rutabagas, but they also offer mini pasties and garden medley vegetable versions.
