Lovefood.com sought to find the most historic dishes in each state from based on user reviews, awards, and the first-hand experience of their team. The foodie publication's choices range from "retro desserts to fabulous fast food and sumptuous snacks".

Their pick for most historic, however, is Frankenmuth's World Famous Golden Fried Chicken from Zehnder's of Frankenmuth

The restaurant certainly has a rich and long history! It was first built in1856 as the Exchange Hotel. In 1888 the Union Hotel was built across the street and later renamed Fischer's Hotel.

In 1928, William and Emilie Zehnder bought the Exchange Hotel and renamed it Zehnder's of Frankenmuth. They remodeled it to look like George Washington's home, Mount Vernon.

By 1950, the Zehnder children were in charge and they bought Fischer's restaurant across the street. They remodeled it with a Bavarian theme, renaming it the Bavarian Inn. In 1959 they held a weeklong celebration in honor the restaurant's grand reopening and Frankenmuth's German heritage. Today it's know as the Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival.

According to Zehnder's website, it was the Fischer family that originated the Family Style Chicken dinner in Frankenmuth, which you'll find on the menu at both restaurants.

Once the Zehnders purchased the Fischer Hotel (now the Bavarian Inn), they worked to perfect the recipe. According to the Bavarian Inn's website, William “Tiny” Zehnder developed a special seasoning for the recipe.

Lovefood praises the steamed chicken that's breaded and then fried until it's crisp and juicy.

Zehnder's says their guests eat around 950,000 pounds of chicken per year!

The all-you-can-eat chicken is complimented by sides like mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, vegetables, and cranberry relish.

Other menu items include Jumbo Shrimp, Weiner Schnitzel, Walleye, Prime Rib, Steak, Perch, and more.

Today Zehnder's has expanded to include multiple restaurants, a hotel, bakery, and golf course.
