The penalties for child abandonment in Michigan are thousands of dollars in fines and up to 10 years in prison. The penalties can be increased if a child is left in a dangerous situation.
It is bad enough we hear stories of kids in Michigan being left in vehicles while a person is in a casino, or off doing drugs, but to leave them in a house to fend for themselves for years is unimaginable to most Michiganders.
Michigan Woman Arrested For Abandoning Children In Their Home for Over 4 Years
What looked like a normal home in a Pontiac neighborhood was the site of one of the worst child abandonment stories I have ever heard about in Michigan.
According to WXYZ, a 15-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old girl were discovered living in a home by themselves in deplorable conditions. Trashed stacked 4 feet high, human feces in several rooms, and the kids have not been to school in at least 3 years.

The landlord who owns the home contacted authorities to do a wellness check because the woman had not paid the rent since October. Sheriff deputies learned from the boy the mom left them in 2020 or 2021 and would only stop by once a week to drop off food. The neighbors didn't know that kids lived in the house since the girls had not been outside in years. The three kids had no hygiene training or materials. Their hair was matted, their clothes were soiled, and their toenails were so long it affected how the kids walked.
I don't understand how three kids can fall through the cracks like this and family, friends, or the school look into where they were.

The mother has been arrested and the kids are in the care of a relative. There is no word yet on why the mother abandoned the children but the Oakland County Sheriff's Department is still investigating.
