The holidays are quickly approaching, and many of us couldn't be more ready for them. Halloween was early this year making October feel like a blink, while Thanksgiving is late this year, making the run-up to the date feel like a century. All this to say: we're all ready for the holidays.

Part of the holidays is taking a vacation to escape the hustle and bustle of your daily life. Last year I took a trip to Ireland, and it was lovely. But this year's vacation plans are sort of up in the air. So, if you've been looking for places to travel like me, there are some places the US government has said you should avoid at all costs.

I would not consider myself an exotic traveler, but there are plenty of people braver than me who travel the world and visit places that you won't find at the top of US News' Best Places To Visit Around The World. For that reason, the US government has created a classification system ranking travel danger from levels 1-4:

  • Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions
  • Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution
  • Level 3: Reconsider Travel
  • Level 4: Do Not Travel

Below are the places the US has marked as Level 4 DO NOT TRAVEL locations.

The Official U.S. Government 'Do Not Travel' List

Traveling to unique and exotic places rather than the usual tourist traps can be quite an adventure. However, it's crucial to research your destination thoroughly.

While every trip comes with some degree of risk, requiring you to mind your surroundings and take some precautions, there are some places you just shouldn't visit, as they are not worth the risk.

The United States government has a convenient website that helps by listing travel advisories they have in place for countries all over the world, ranking the risk from Level 1 through Level 4.

If a country is issued a Level 4 advisory, you should NOT travel there. As of November 2024, the countries below are on the 'Do Not Travel' list.
