Tough Economy? Even Deer Are Breaking Into Homes Now
The down economy has people scaling back for the holidays, but does the financial crisis affect animals? A deer recently broke into a home in Walker.
Michigan Deer Do The Craziest Things
I have witnessed deer do unusual things while hunting. I saw a couple of female deer stand up on their hind legs, and basically fist fight. I used to live in an apartment complex in Davison, Michigan, when a buck during the rut (mating season) saw his reflection in the sliding glass doors. Thinking it was another deer, he charged the windows running through the apartment splashing blood all over the walls before leaving with the curtains wrapped around his horns.
Deer do not seem to mind houses and buildings as long as there is a snack involved. Below is a list of crazy things deer have done in Michigan:
- The Library Intruder - In late 2023, a buck crashed through a window into the U of M Law Library.
- Store Visitor - a deer in St. Clair Shores wandered into a store, and later brought its entire family back for another visit.
- Home Invaders - Deer have been filmed breaking into Michigan homes and running around before escaping.
- Pumpkinhead - In 2022 a deer was spotted in Bloomfield Hills with a trick or treating bucket on its head. Another deer in Lansing in 2023 had a similar experience.
- Banking - Several years ago a deer saw its reflection in a bank window in downtown Flint before crashing in to make a corn withdrawal.

Economy So Bad A Deer Tried A Home Invasion
Times are tough, especially when going to the grocery store, home supplies store, and of course when Christmas shopping. Many Michiganders are not spending as much because of higher prices on nearly everything a family purchases to survive.
The economy has been hard on many Michigan farmers with many not planting fields for lack of demand from other countries like China. Would less food on a farmers field cause a deer to do a home invasion? Probably not, but recently a deer in Walker decided to become a squatter in a local home until police came to evict the wayward deer.
According to MLive, a deer got into a home in Walker and put up shop in the basement. The deer somehow got into the home and the owners were unable to get it to leave so they called the police. Maybe it was the cold, because the deer refused to leave and it took over two days to finally shoo the animal out with a broom and catch pole to guide it out safely.

The deer was uninjured during the eviction and walked away peacefully back to its normal habitat.
