In addition to Gov. Whitmer proclaiming June 2019 as "Pride Month" in Michigan, on Tuesday, State Senator Jeremy Moss, introduced SB 351 which would amend the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to add two more protected classes:  sexual orientation and gender identity.

From Michigan.Gov, the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1976 is:

AN ACT to define civil rights; to prohibit discriminatory practices, policies, and customs in the exercise of those rights based upon religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital status; to preserve the confidentiality of records regarding arrest, detention, or other disposition in which a conviction does not result; to prescribe the powers and duties of the civil rights commission and the department of civil rights; to provide remedies and penalties; to provide for fees; and to repeal certain acts and parts of acts.

So far, says every democrat has signed the bill and the version in the House, has a republican co-sponsor.

This is all in-line with what Governor Whitmer said in her first State of the State Address when she encouraged the Legislature to pass legislation that would do exactly what SB 351 does; expand to include the two new protected classes. reports the governor is pushing this so heavily because she believes we’ve been on "the wrong side history", as a state, for not already having this act amended to include the two new classes.
