The Winter Knaps Are Over For Michigan Black Bears
My best friend Curt lives in the Upper Peninsula and he has a couple of trail cameras that are out all year long. Doesn't look like he has updated the date on his camera because it's clearly two years off but did catch a really nice bear on camera the other day and sent me the photo above. The photo was actually taken on April 9, 2024.
If you watched a lot of cartoons from back in the day, bears really don't hibernate they just enter long periods of sleep. Often when it warms up in the winter they will take a stroll. Michigan black bears will typically enter their den by December and exit around late March and early April.

Black Bear Breaks Into Michigan Chocolate Shop
It is no secret in Michigan that black bears love sweet stuff. Many bear hunters who use bait to attract bears will use donuts or anything sweet they can get their hands on to get them to frequent their hunting stand.
There is a chocolate shop near Sleeping Bear Dunes called Grocer's Daughter Chocolate and a black bear came knocking. When no one was home, the bear decided to go in and grab a big bag of sugar for a late-night snack. For bears, it's all about the calories.
