River ice fishing is the most dangerous type of ice fishing. Even in the coldest of winters you still have goes going through the Saginaw River because of the high rate of current.

I have been driving a couple of hours north of Grand Rapids to icefish this year in order to find safe ice. On my drive, I cross the Muskegon River in an area that is normally frozen this time of the year. One week I drive by and there were people fishing from shore because there was no ice. The next week there is a guy in the middle of the river standing on maybe 2 inches of ice and told my son that guy is crazy.

The boat had an engine issue and while trying to restart the boat Nathan James Robbins got his sweater caught in the motor. In trying to release him the boat wound up capsizing and the two men went into the Tittabawassee River. One man swam to shore while Robbins got caught up in the river's current.
