Dead Baby Goats Found Dumped In Manistee National Forest
Over 70 baby goats were found dead in piles in Manistee National Forest, prompting a disturbing investigation into animal cruelty in Michigan.
Baby Goats
My best friend, Curt, used to work on a horse farm in Southeastern Michigan when we were growing up. I would stop by and help him finish up chores so we could go out and run the roads as teenagers.
The farm specialized in horse racing. I would often see jockeys out running horses. When I would go to the farm in the spring to meet up with my friend, I would look around for the baby goats. I used to enjoy watching the baby goats play. I thought puppies and kittens were fun to watch, but baby goats have a lot more fun than other animals when they are young.

Piles of Dead Goats Discovered in Manistee Forest
I live in the Manistee National Forest and was quite disturbed when I learned that over 70 baby goats were found dead in piles in the forest. I fish a lot of the lakes, my son and I mountain bike often, and I drive around the Manistee National Forest because of its sheer beauty.
According to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), a complaint was made that someone has been dumping dead baby goats and placing them in piles in Newaygo County. Over 70 dead baby goats were discovered, but no suspect had been identified.
The DNR contacted an officer with the United States Forest Service who works in Newaygo County to investigate. The USFS officer spotted an ear tag on one of the dead goats and was able to determine what farm the animal came from.
The USFS officer went to the farm and interviewed a suspect who told them the goats were alive and well in the barn. After inspecting the barn, the officer reported that the goats resembled the deceased goats found in the forest, and another dead baby goat was also discovered. The officer noticed the poor conditions the animals were living in and has since forwarded the case to Newaygo County Animal Control for further investigation.
